SpongeBob SquarePants was a 2006 licensed line. It was based on the SpongeBob SquarePants television series featured on Nickelodeon. The line still continued five years later. The theme was known for including a variety of exclusive minifigure pieces, as the characters in the theme were not humanoid. Each set was based upon the adventures and life of SpongeBob SquarePants.
After LEGO got the Disney franchise from MEGA BLOKS in 2010, MEGA BLOKS announced they had a new license with Nickelodeon, the owners of SpongeBob SquarePants. However, in 2011, it was revealed that the license was only with Nick Jr. and did not affect LEGO's current license. Unfortunately, at the 2014 New York Toy Fair, MEGA BLOKS announced that they had picked up the SpongeBob license from LEGO and made a series of sets released that fall, and have been sold in toy stores all over the world since then. In 2015, MEGA BLOKS announced they picked up the rights to produce toys based on other Nickelodeon cartoons, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
