Summary
There is an ancient planet at the center of the LEGO Multiverse inhabited by an evil mastermind, Lord Vortech. It is said that he who controls the Foundational Elements that this planet is built upon, controls all of the Multiverse. Lord Vortech has vowed to be that ruler, summoning characters from a variety of LEGO worlds to help him find these building bricks of LEGO civilization. Some have agreed. Others have rebelled. And only the combined powers of the greatest LEGO heroes can stop him. When a mysterious and powerful vortex suddenly appears in various LEGO worlds, different characters from DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings and The LEGO Movie are swept away. To save their friends, Batman, Gandalf and Wyldstyle bravely jump into the vortex. As they journey to locations beyond their wildest imaginations in search of their friends, they soon realize that Lord Vortech is summoning villains from across different LEGO worlds to help him gain control. As his power grows, worlds mix, unexpected characters meet and all boundaries are broken. Our heroes must travel through space and time to rescue their friends before the vortexes destroy all of LEGO humanity.
Story
WARNING! SPOILER ALERTS FOLLOW!
Part 1
Foundation Prime
- “But the Elements can't be safely harnessed! It's too dangerous! And what about the payroll you promised meeeeeeeee??!?”
- ―X-PO while being "dismissed" by Lord Vortech
There is an ancient dimension at the heart of the known LEGO Multiverse. Known simply as Foundation Prime, the dimension is solely composed of a deadly, endless, Sea of Possibilities. What secrets were buried here, none knew. Over the vast sea of bricks, images sporadically levitated from the surface.
Suddenly, an explosion seemed to begin to form. But this was different from the others. Bricks foundered into a ring above the ocean, in which something appeared. It seemed like a hole, but so strange was it that "rift" would be a better description. In the Rift a bright figure appeared and landed on the sea, which spread out solidly under his feet. Behind him, a drone exited the rift and began scanning the sea. The Figure bent over to examine the bricks under him.
A moment later he heard the drone saying, "Hey, I found it there! Uh, I mean, Anomaly located, Master."
The Figure stood up, and walked slowly towards the drone. "Yes....." he whispered triumphantly. "I've found it!"
"Uh... you found it?" asked the drone.
The Figure ignored him. "After all these years of searching, it really exists! Foundation Prime!" He waved his staff, eroding the now-solid bricks in front of him, revealing strange diagrams. "Cited here... are the Foundation Elements, artifacts from the start of time, scattered across the dimension...and onlyI can gather them together into one place!"
"Uh, just so you know, the Foundation Elements are the cornerstones of time and space, so they're...kinda important, for, well...the entire universe.." said the drone.
The figure turned towards him impatiently. "Your services are no longer required." he said stiffly. He aimed his staff at the drone, creating a rift behind it.
"But the elements can't be safely harnessed! It's too dangerous! AND WHAT ABOUT THE PAYROLL YOU PROMISED MEEEEEEE!?!?!??" screamed the drone in a panicked voice.
The Figure faced the diagrams again maniacally. "I will have them all! I will control their power...I will make...UNIVERSES collide!!!!!!" He began to shudder uncontrollably. "N-no! I will not be...d-denied....perfection!" he collapsed onto the ground. "My dedication to this work has...taken its toll.....not for much longer can I freely pass betweeeen dimensions..." he groaned. Then, turning thoughtful, he murmured, "But there is another way...."
He lifted his arms, and as if on cue a palace began to build from the sea.
Lord Vortech's reign had begun.
Part 2
Universes Collide!
Bane sped through the streets of Gotham, closely pursued by Batman and Robin. As he passed a corner some of the green crystals he had stolen flew off his tank and into Robin's hand. "Hey, I got it!" Robin rode up to Batman. "What does he want with all this kryptonite, Batman?"
"What everyone wants with kryptonite! To bring down Superman! But not today. Cut him off at the bridge! We'll have him cornered."
"Okay, Batman!" Robin sped ahead...but then paused. He was slowly lifting off the ground. "Whoaat??" he gasped.
Batman turned around. "Robin!?" he called.
Robin turned pale with fear and uncertainty. The wall of a building had been ripped away, revealing a strange vortex. "WOAH!!!! HELP BATMAAAAN!!!!" was all he could breathe out before he was sucked in.
Batman stared in shock, then, going into full gear, he sped into the vortex after Robin, much to Bane's disappointment. "Aww, and we were having such a nice chase..." mumbled the supervillain.
"Over the bridge! FLY!" cried the wizened old man as four hobbits, two men, an elf, and a dwarf ran over the Bridge of Khazad-dum. As he turned to follow them, a dark force came up behind him. It was of man-shape, maybe, yet greater, and a power and terror went before it. It was a shadow and a flame. A Balrog of Morgoth.
The old man turned and faced the monster. He stared at it with power, and, lifting his staff into the air, he cried, "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" His staff smote the bridge and smote asunder. The Balrog took one step onto the bridge, and fell into the endless abyss below.
The old man turned around, only to feel the Balrog's whip curling about his knees. He grasped vainly at the stone. "Fly, you fools!" he cried, and was gone.
As he fell, the old man clasped his sword and began to attack the Balrog, but he was interupted by a strange blue light above him. A strange wheeled "creature" fell past him before it exploded in a ball of flame. A black figure flew up out of it and shot a grappling hook at the Balrog. He landed on the beast and called, "WHERE'S ROBIN??"
"Behind you!" called the old man as the dark knight was picked up by the Balrog.
"I said, where's Robin?" called the caped crusader as he was thrown around by the Balrog's mostrous fist.
"My good fellow, I have no idea what you're talking about!" shouted the old man as he stabbed the monster. "Have you tried looking in a tree?"
"Not a robin! ROBIN!" the Balrog dropped him and the dark knight stood up. "He got sucked up into a weird hole in Gotham. I jumped in and it led me to you!" The Balrog picked him up again.
The old man stared at him. "And you are?" he asked.
The caped crusader tensed up. "I'm Batman."
He freed himself from the grasp of the Balrog, shot a grappling hook straight up, and lifted the old man with him as they flew out of the bottomless pit.
"My thanks, good fellow!" said the old man as Batman helped him up.
One of the hobbits who had spotted him ran toward them. "GANDALF????" Suddenly a vortex opened behind him, sucking him in.
"FRODO!!" cried the old man. Then turning to Batman, he instructed, "Frodo has the One Ring, which cannot fall into the Enemy's hands! Quickly, fly!"
"I'm not actually a bat, Gandalf!" mumbled Batman as he followed him through the vortex.
The group of people left behind stared in horror. "So I suppose we just wait for them, then?" suggested the fattest of the hobbits.
"It be Wyldstyle, who be winnin' this dance contest!" judged MetalBeard.
"What? THIS CONTEST WAS FIXED!!!!!" screamed Unikitty. Then, calming down, she said, "Uh, I mean, 'Well done, Wyldstyle!'"
"Thanks! I mean, uh, 'Yeah, whatever...'" said Wyldstyle. Abruptly a blue shadow passed over them and the pirate was sucked up into a vortex.
"What the? Where did MetalBeard go??" shrieked Emmet. Another vortex appeared and two figures fell onto the ground.
Wyldstyle stared. "Batman? Gandalf?" then, seeing a third arrival, she added, "Batman????"
"Hey! You landed on my back, man!" accused Batman.
"I'M Batman." responded Batman.
"No, I didn't say--hey! I'm Batman!"
"I'm Batman."
"I'm Batman!"
"I'M BATMAN!"
"I'M BATMAN!"
The two Batmans growled at each other before attacking each other.
"Oh, look! Twins! I wonder if one of them's evil..." commented Gandalf.
"Why are there two Batmans? Batmen? Bat....mens?" asked Unikitty.
"There aren't. There's only ONE Batman. I don't know who this stiff is." said the Batman from Gotham.
"Hey!" shouted the Batman from the LEGO Movie.
"Well, this is all delightful, but I don't suppose you saw a young halfling pass this way?" asked Gandalf.
"Uh, what's a halfling?" asked Emmet.
"The last thing we saw was out friend MetalBeard getting sucked into a strange vortex." said Wyldstyle.
"I think it was more of a dimensional rift." corrected (the real) Batman. "Where is it?"
"It disappeared after it took him!" said Emmet. (What's his name again?)
"So you didn't cause all that?" asked Wyldstyle.
"Might I suggest..." began Gandalf. "...that we set out on a quest to find this....rift, you say?"
"A quest? Let me go pack some rainbow-colored LEGO bricks!" cried Unikitty in pure joy.
"And I'll get my wrench!" called Emmet as he hurried off.
"Excellent! We shall be The Fellowship of the---" he was cut off by a vortex appearing underneath himself, Batman, and Wyldstyle, sucking them in.
"Fellowship of the Arggh? That's a terrible name!" muttered the LEGO Movie Batman.
"Aww, they left without the home team?" complained Emmet.
"Gang-shmang! They left without ME! YEAARGH!!!" wept Unikitty.
"We are at this strange thing's mercy, and I do not trust where it is taking us!" cried Gandalf as they flew through the rift.
"Agreed! Wylstyle! I need your scanner!" called Batman as the Master Builder threw her relic scanner toward him. "If I can locate whatever's generating this rift, then I can disrupt it!"
After the scanner bleeped a few times, Gandalf asked, "Does that mean it worked?"
His answer was in front of him: a separate path developed in the rift, and swept them away to a new, unknown, dimension.
They flew onto the ground. Looking behind him, Batman saw the Gateway that had brought them there implode, sucking several glowing pieces into it.
Wyldstyle got up. "Well, I don't know exactly what you did, but we're still alive!"
"Ugh... are you sure?" asked Gandalf as he attempted to stand up. Meanwhile, Batman had been studying the remnants of the Gateway.
"This technology looks advanced....my guess is, that Gateway created the rift that brought us here..."
"Which gateway?" asked Gandalf.
"The one that exploded.!" responded Batman none too kindly.
"Hmm.... then perhaps...."
"We should rebuild it!" finished Wyldstyle.
Batman swung his batarang at a group of pieces that had been imbedded into the wall, as Gandalf and Wyldstyle collected the others.
"Leave the building to the Master Builder." said Wyldstyle as she rebuilt the Gateway.
They studied it curiously as a mechanized voice stated, "Accessing backup power, all systems are go, limited system functionality restored."
"Limited System Functionality? Wait, am I gonna lose an arm if I go through that thing?" fretted Wyldstyle.
"It does look unstable....I saw some glowing parts get sucked into it...they must have been important..." deduced Batman.
"Well, it seems to be alive at least!" comforted Gandalf.
"My relic scanner's showing that there's definitely something through there." commented Wyldstyle.
"Could it be leading us to the missing bricks..?" asked Gandalf.
"Could be..." said Batman.
"Or Metalbeard?" asked Wyldstyle hopefully.
"Couldn't be..." said Batman. Then they heard a distant 'aaarrrrghgghh!!!!' from through the vortex.
"That's Metalbeard! He's in trouble!" Wyldstyle paused. "Or he's really happy. He uses 'argh' for a lot of things. Either way we have to find him."
The three heroes leaped into the Gateway's rift, not knowing where it may lead them.
Part 3
Follow the LEGO Brick Road
The first thing they saw when they reached their destination was yellow. Looking up, they saw a lush world with a glowing, green city at the horizon.
Batman paused in observation. "We are not in Gotham anymore." he said.
Gandalf rubbed his back. "I would have had a more pleasant journey on the back of that Balrog." he moaned.
Batman grimaced. "It's so.... colorful...."
Gandalf straightened up. "Yes...it is rather pleasant." he said as he watched a peacock showing off its feathers.
Wyldstyle studied her scanner. "I can't see Metalbeard.."
"Well something's close." said Batman. "You're still tracking that signal. This way!"
"Yes." said Gandalf. "I believe the correct course of action would be to, well, follow this yellow brick road!"
They trekked until the way was barred by a wagon. Wyldstyle looked around. "Maybe this wagon belongs to..." she paused in astonishment. "...that color...changing...horse over there? Okay, that's weird, right?"
Batman ignored her as he searched for a way to clear the path. "I should be able to figure this out... Iam Batman, after all." He noticed a hook protruding from the wagon. Reaching for his grapple gun, he smiled. "The World's Greatest Detective strikes again." He pulled down the wagon, revealing a grove of pink flowers spread over the path. Wyldstyle ran forward until, suddenly, she dropped down in sleep. "Get out of there!" called Batman, dragging the Master Builder out of the poppie grove. "There's got to be another way..."
After clearing the poppies, the three heroes paused. "Is that....singing?" asked Wyldstyle. From over the yellow brick road, this melody was floating through the air:
"....We're off to see the wizard, the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. We hear that he's a wonderful wiz, if ever a wiz there was. If ever a wonderful wiz there was, the Wizard is one, because, because, because, because, because, because, becaaaauuuse, because of the wonderful things he does! We're off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz!....."
Gandalf stared. "It's not just singing, it's a singing scarecrow! Amongst other oddities..."
Batman looked up in alarm. "The Scarecrow! I knew it! This whole thing is a hallucination!" He sped off towards the sound of singing.
"I think he's going crazy." deduced Wyldstyle.
"Going, my dear? He's wearing a bat-costume!" chuckled Gandalf.
"...we're off to see the Wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz!" Batman had caught up with the four singers by now, and he leaped in front of them.
"You're coming with me, Scarecrow!" ordered Batman.
A young girl stood forward in delight. "Another one to join us on our journey! And what are you missing?" she asked happily.
Batman frowned. "A sense of humor. Hand him over!"
"But why ever would we do that?" asked the girl worriedly.
"Because he's a heartless villain!" growled Batman.
A man made of tin caught his attention. "NO! I'M heartless," he pointed at himself, "and HE'S brainless!" he shook the Scarecrow.
"Am I still a villain, though?" asked the Scarecrow innocently. Just then, what looked like a lion waved his arms in fear.
"I-I s-see s-something s-s-scary!!!!!" he whimpered.
"What? Is it Toto again?" mocked the tin man.
"Oh, my, you are heartless!" Then the girl noticed she was lifting into the air. "Oh no! Not another tornado! Help!!!" she held onto her little dog for dear life before all four travelers were sucked into a rift. At the same moment, a shrill laughter cut through the air like a knife.
"What on Middle-Earth is going on?" panted Gandalf, who had just caught up to Batman.
"Yeah, who was that laughing?" asked Wyldstyle at the same time.
"I don't know...." Batman was cut off by Wyldstyle exclaming:
"Look! Is that one of those Gateway pieces you mentioned?"
Batman studied the glowing element in the middle of the (yellow brick) road. "Yes. Let's grab it and get out of this place!"
Gandalf walked forward leisurely. "Goodness! This has been remarkably easy, hasn't it?"
Batman slouched forward in annoyance. "Oh, you just had to jinx it, didn't you?"
In the distance several dark shapes were soaring. The same evil laughter as before sliced the air. "Now that that meddling do-gooder is gone, and all of Oz is mine! So long, Dorothy! So long! Mwahahahahahahhaha!!!!!!!" cried the leading figure. She then spotted the Gateway piece. "What's that? Something magical?" She grinned fiercely. "It feels so pretty...it feels so powerful! They can't have it!"
Gandalf tensed up. "It would appear that we're not the only ones interested in the Gateway pieces."
The evil figure flew toward the piece. "Get away from my property!" she ordered. "W-whatever it is..." she added rather doubtfully.
Batman stood poised for action. "We got monkey dive-bombers!" Several winged monkeys had broken off from the main group.
"Ugh, this place makes Cloud Cookoo Land look normal..." muttered Wyldstyle.
The laughing figure dropped a circle of green fire around the three heroes, preventing their escape. Gandalf studied her movements. "That broom-stick is defying gravity, somehow!"
The Witch (of course, that is what she was) rained down fire on their heads. Suddenly the heroes felt their minds clouding up. Dimly they heard the Witch chanting, "A spell to halt the progress ahead, to freeze, to bind my foes in red! Stay in the Red Mist, that's just fine, your thoughts, your moves, your actions are MINE!!!" the Witch released them as a monkey swiped up the Gateway piece. Wyldstyle groaned. "You'll have to do better than that, my fine lady!" mocked the Witch. "Without my sister's Ruby Slippers, you're no match for me!" then, speaking to the monkeys, she ordered, "Away, my pretties! AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!"
The slowly recovering heroes ran after her, towards a deep, dark forest. A sign stood at the entrance that read, 'Turn Back!'
Gandalf groaned, as Batman headed toward a tree with an apple hanging off it. "This might look simple, but I've always got to be ready in case it's a trap..." He threw his batarang at the tree, trying to clear a path. Much to his surprise, the tree looked up.
"Hey, who throwin' stuff et me? Oh, yoo, heh? Gett a tayst o' dis!" he snarled non-grammatically, throwing apples at the heroes. At the same moment, several winged monkey scouts rushed upon them.
"They must have been lying in wait! Or is it flying in wait...?" thumped Batman, swinging a monkey into a tree.
Before they had had too many experiences, the Witch's castle loomed before them. Several green-skinned guards were humming deeply as they changed formation. Batman, Gandalf, and Wyldstyle ran up ahead, dealing quickly with the guards. Batman, batarang in hand, attacked the drawbridge chains, releasing the heavy wooden plank. They ran into the castle, only to be greeted by the shrill laughter.

Easter Eggs
- In the opening cut scene many symbols are being formed from the surface of Foundation Prime. One of the symbols is the number 42 (facing away from camera). This is a reference to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy where the meaning of life and the universe is revealed to be 42.
- In "A Dalektable Adventure" there is the words "Bad Wolf" on parts of the background. This is a reference to Rose Tyler, a companion of the 9th and 10th Doctor. She becomes the Bad Wolf by absorbing the time vortex and proceeds to leave the message Bad Wolf all over the universe as a message to herself
- In GLaD to see you, HAL 9000 appears through a portal and talks to GLaDOS, and distracts her while you use the Chroma Keystone. HAL 9000 is from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Also, HAL 9000 continues to ask GLaDOS is she has seen Dave, the main character from that movie.
Notes
- This is the third popular video game to use a Toy Pad feature, the first and second being Skylanders and Disney Infinity.
- There are 14 different themes so far in the game:
- TT Games has hinted that every year the game will be updated with new levels, story, and themes; thus, it is unlikely there will ever be a LEGO Dimensions 2. They have also hinted that the player can defy gravity, but how this is accomplished is unknown.
- While many of the voice actors reprised their roles from other properties including TV shows, films and video games, several dialogue for each character were taken from the archive. In addition, the dialogue from Doctors 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, The War Doctor, 9, 10 and 11 are all from the TV series.
- The Toy Pad is much more than a normal spawning device; it has several different "modes" that are unlocked using the In-Game Keystones:
- Scale allows the player to change the size of the character via moving the minifigure to different sides of the Toy Pad. This is useful for fitting in small areas or reaching high areas.
- Chroma allows the player to alter the "color" of the character to solves colorcoded puzzles.
- Elemental allows the player to give the character Ninjago-esque "elemental abilities".
- Fire is unlocked by placing the character on the Red side of the Toy Pad; it gives the player an omni-enveloping Fire Shield and other fire-based powers (such as shooting out a beam of heat).
- This ability allows the player to attack enemies with heat, melt ice, and solve other heat-based puzzles. It also protects the character from external fire.
- Electricity is unlocked by placing the character on the Light-Blue side of the Toy Pad; it gives the player an omni-enveloping Electricity Shield and other electrical-based powers (such as shooting out a beam of lightning).
- This ability allows the player to electrocute enemies and charge up generators. It also protects the player from external shocks.
- Water is unlocked by placing the character on the Blue side of the Toy Pad; it gives the player an omni-enveloping Water Shield and other water-based powers (such as shooting out a beam of wetness).
- This ability allows the player to soak enemies and put out flames. It also, based on other elemental powers, should protect the player from various water-traps.
- Earth is assumedly unlocked by placing the character on the Brown side of the Toy Pad; it gives the player an omni-enveloping Dirt Shield and other mud-based powers (such as shooting out a beam of agriculture).
- As the Toy Pad has only three sections, which elements are usable depends on which room you are in.
- Fire is unlocked by placing the character on the Red side of the Toy Pad; it gives the player an omni-enveloping Fire Shield and other fire-based powers (such as shooting out a beam of heat).
- Locate allows the player to search for rifts, upon finding them a random object from any of the 14 themes will come and help you.
- Shift allows the player to shift through color coded rifts in the world by moving the minifigure to the appropriate color on the Toy Pad.
- This game introduces a new kind of Hub World: The Adventure Worlds. There is an Adventure World for each theme.
- Due to Batman and Robin's appearance, it is possible that the game's events happen after LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham.
- The bonus level in the Simpsons level pack is a direct adaptation of the Simpsons episode "El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer (The Mysterious Voyage of Our Homer)", reusing all of Dan Castellaneta and Johnny Cash's original audio.
- The bonus level in the Back to the Future level pack is a direct adaptation of the first film, though with minor changes and drastically reduced in scope.
