The preliminary design document for an unproduced ''[[LEGO Adventurers]]'' video game includes a character named '''Kit Attaway''' who is described as an ace pilot, seemingly matching Harry Cane's profile. Class 2 article
This article is about the Adventurers minifigure. For the Hidden Side character, see List of minor Hidden Side characters#Harry Cane. For other Adventurers characters misidentified as Harry Cane, see Lord Sam Sinister, Gabarro, or Mike.

Harry Cane, also known as Billy Speed, is an Adventurers minifigure introduced in 1998. He makes appearances in the Egypt and Jungle sub-themes.

Description

Harry Cane has black legs, and an earth orange torso printed with an aviator's jacket. His arms are earth orange, and his hands and head are bright yellow. His face has a smirking expression, a black moustache, stubble, and sideburns. He wears an earth orange aviator's helmet with black goggles.

In 5784 Soccer Mania, Billy Speed has grey pants instead of black.

Name

Compared to other Adventurers Egypt characters, Harry Cane's name is one of the most consistent across different markets, regions, and publications. However, there are still a few instances where his name is changed.[1]

In Denmark, the character was originally named Harry Caine, as seen in the 1998 Danish catalogs.[2] In localized North American media when the theme first released, such as LEGO Mania Magazine, the spelling of the character's name was slightly changed to Harry Cane.[3][4][5] This name is also used in UK-based publications, such as Bricks 'n' Pieces magazine,[6] the Dorling Kindersley books The Curse of the Mummy - An Interactive Puzzle Book and The Lost Temple - An Interactive Puzzle Book, and LEGO Adventures! Magazine.[7] The name is directly translated into Russian as Гарри Кейн[8] and into Japanese as ハリーケイン.[9] In other sources, the spelling of Harry Cane's surname continues to vary. For example, Bricks 'n' Pieces alternatively uses Harry Caine (matching the Danish catalog),[6] and the LEGO Mania Magazine story Zeppelin Adventure uses Harry Kane.[10]

In Germany, the character was named Billy Speed in LEGO World Club Magazine March/April 1998[11] as well as in the audio drama 5542644 Die Jagd nach dem Pharaonenschatz.[12] Oddly, this name is also used in all languages of 5784 Soccer Mania, while the name "Harry Cane" is misattributed to another character who appears to be Mike.

In a Swedish print ad for the Adventurers Egypt theme, Harry Cane was named Lars Looping, depicted with the face of Basil the Bat Lord, and characterized as doing anything for money.[1][source?]

While Harry Cane's own name does not change much, there are multiple instances where it is attributed to the wrong character, in addition to the aforementioned example in Soccer Mania. Bricks 'n' Pieces and some 1998 UK catalogs refer to 5928 Bi-Wing Baron as "5928 Harry Cane's Bi-Plane", therefore indicating that Lord Sam Sinister is Harry Cane;[6][13] this is corrected in later catalogs to "5928 Evil Eye's Bi-Plane".[14][15] Similarly, Harry Cane piloting the 5925 Pontoon Plane is misidentified as "Evil Eye's Bi-plane" in the Christmas 1999 issue of Bricks 'n' Pieces.[16] Shop At Home product descriptions for 5976 River Expedition list Harry Cane's name among the set's minifigures, but the set actually includes Gabarro instead.[17]

Background

Harry Cane is an ace pilot who flies planes for Cane Airlines. He is an old friend of Johnny Thunder and occasionally helps him in various expeditions.[18] In addition to flying biplanes, he can fly zeppelins and hot-air balloons.

Billy Speed appears in 5784 Soccer Mania as the goalie for the Adventurers Pilots team. After the Adventurers Pilots are beaten in story mode, Billy can be added to the player's custom team. This is the only time he appears in a video game.
