Thomas Kalmaku is Hal Jordan's best friend in both the movie and comics. He works at Ferris Air.
In the movie, after Hal Jordan was chosen as Abin Sur's replacement as Green Lantern of space sector 2814, Tom was called to the crash site of Abin Sur's ship. From there he and Hal discovered how the power battery works, and from there his ring.
