7777 LEGO Trains Idea Book is a Trains themed Idea Book released in 1981. It has 84 pages and contains building instruction for 14 alternative Train-related LEGO models as well as additional photos of other models in a LEGO model railroad layout.

Description[]

A story runs through the book, of an unnamed minifigure (pictured on the front cover) who builds a handcar, and proceeds to drive it through a 12V Lego railway network, through various scenes including a quarry, a goods yard, a railway maintenance yard, a night-time station, and finally a large multi-level layout containing a viaduct.

Pages 58-61 are devoted to track design guidelines with seven suggested layouts along with a cut-out stencil that can be used to determine the number of supplemental sets required to create each layout.

Resuming to the narrative of the book, the handcar is then lifted from the mains powered 12V network, onto a battery powered 4.5V network, and proceeds to drive his handcar though a circus and then a rolling stock factory, where workers help him to build a jet powered railway vehicle.

Notes[]

  • The minifigure that drives the handcar through the book is the same one that appears in 608 Taxi.
  • The "Pacific" steam locomotive depicted in pages 38-41 is the only known usage of the "large" red wheels other than 7750 Steam Engine with Tender. For this reason, 7750 is a highly sought after set on the used market as a source of this part (along with the red motor module) for enthusiasts wishing to attempt this build.
  • The station that appears on both the front cover and the night time diorama in the centre pages is an expanded version of 7822 Railway Station with a wider footbridge and larger station building
  • The signal maintenance wagon on pages 5-6 was the inspiration behind 7821 Track Maintenance Vehicle which became an official release in 1983.
  • 7777 is notable for its extensive use of TECHNIC elements to create various machines and structures used in the dioramas. Examples include a rubble conveyor (pages 12-13), a transporter crane (pages 18-19) and various designs of bridge viaducts (pages 53-57)
  • The approach pillars on the viaduct in the large multilevel layout on pages 50-51 show a novel usage of minifigure legs to create a hinged platform for the railroad sleepers to locate upon.
  • Several Town sets of the era appear within the dioramas (unlike 6000 LEGOLAND Idea Book which consisted almost entirely of bespoke models) - examples include 6364 Paramedic Unit, 6680 Ambulance, 6365 Summer Cottage, 675 Snack Bar, 6627 Convertible, 646 Auto Service, and 6629 Ambulance
